I like to use the analogy of the pasture to explain the players in the information security arena: sheep, shepherd, wolves and sheepdogs. There are 5 different wolves or hackers who want your corporate assets. These are the red, gray, white and black wolves, along with the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
If you don’t believe that these wolves would target your organization, consider the many leaders who have said, “Hackers would never care about us. We don’t have anything of value to them.” However, no organization is too small to escape being a target; any intelligence valuable to you is valuable to an adversary!
The red wolf represents unfriendly governments such as China, N. Korea or Russia. Their goal is to gather intelligence and extort money. Their motives are nationalistic and they have extensive resources. And they are good at what they do. More threats will be addressed in future columns.
